How to become a Wine Consultant ?

The job of Wine and Spirits Consultant requires knowledge in sales, ideally applied to the world of sommellerie. There are several ways of acquiring the skills needed to do this profession. Thus, you can become a Wine Merchant by following a professional degree program or a technical diploma in the hotel and restaurant industry. Ideally, you should choose a specialization in oenology or in the wine and spirits sector. You also have the possibility of obtaining a certificate of professional qualification as a Wine Consultant Salesperson.

What are the missions of a Club Med Wine Merchant?


A wine steward who works at a Club Med Resort has several responsibilities. Depending on his profile, he may be a Cellar Manager in the Gourmet area or a Wine Consultant. This depends on his qualifications and level of experience.

As a Wine Cellar Manager, he or she sells wines and spirits and ensures their service. Although he/she works mainly in the wine cave, he/she can also work in the bars and restaurants of the Resort. He/she advises customers, taking into account their tastes and desires, to guarantee them a unique experience. In addition to the commercial and service aspects, the Wine Cellar Manager supervises a team of Wine Cellar Salesmen. He/she is also in charge of inventory management and the implementation of promotional activities to boost sales.

The Wine Consultant works mainly in the bars and restaurants of Club Med Resorts. He/she welcomes customers and serves wines and premium spirits. He/she restocks the wines and spirits in the different establishments of the Resort. The Cellarman passes on his knowledge to the teams by training them in the sale and service of wines.

What qualities should a good Cellarman have?

The job of a Wine Consultant requires technical notions, skills and many qualities. The Sommelier knows how to match food and wine. He must also have a taste for contact and be sociable in order to welcome and advise each customer as well as possible. This position requires a great capacity of organization. The Wine Waiter prioritizes his actions to serve the customer as soon as possible.
